Burt Hamner is the Cleantech Mentor, helping entrepreneurs, corporations, cleantech programs, and policy makers to make business more sustainable through clean technologies and better business practices.   Over 5000 managers have been trained by Burt in cleantech process analysis.  He has advised governments in 16 countries, and consulted to the US Agency for International Development, the Asian Development Bank, the United Nations, small and large companies, and non-profit organizations.

Burt used his many years of international clean tech consulting experience and marine technology knowledge to found Hydrovolts in Seattle in 2007 to make portable hydrokinetic turbines that generate renewable energy from water currents around the world.  By October 2012 he raised over $3M in angel investment and contest winnings, grew the staff to 11 people and a national network of partners and supporters, and launched the early commercialization of the company’s market-creating turbines.

Under his leadership Hydrovolts was the 2009 winner of the national Clean Tech Open Sustainability Award, a two-time finalist in the Clean Tech Open business plan contest, winner of the international Imagine H2O Water-Energy Nexus prize, and named an Artemis Top 50 water technology company, and a Global Innovator by Launch.Org. In October 2012, as Hydrovolts’ Canal and Waterfall turbines were coming to market with a strong sales pipeline, Burt stepped aside as CEO of Hydrovolts for a new CEO with much more experience building a machinery manufacturing company.

Before founding Hydrovolts, Burt Hamner spent 15 years as a clean technology consultant and he worked in 16 countries, primarily in Southeast Asia and South America. He was appointed as International Advisor on Marine Energy Resources in 2008 by the New Zealand Ministry of Energy. He was appointed as Chairman of the Renewable Energy Committee of the Marine Technology Society from 2008-10. In 2003 he chaired the panel session on Clean Technology Investment at the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Finance.
